La famiglia alla fine del secolo XV risiedeva a Castellarano, in provincia di Reggio Emilia. Pare sia oriunda dalla Toscana, da cui avrebbe tratto il suo nome. Messer Giovan Battista era notaio e procuratore in Castellarano nei primi anni del secolo XVI. Da lui nacque l'11 giugno 1535 Domenico, che divenne cardinale, e portò la famiglia a grande lustro e ricchezza. Egli è il più illustre personaggio di questa casata, che ne annovera molti altri distintissimi, specialmente negli studi e per cariche civili ed ecclesiatiche. Fece i primi studi in Reggio, presso suo zio Giovanni, sacerdote, letterato, accademico politico, che lasciò carmi latini e degli epigrammi. Poscia fu mandato a Roma. Divenne "abbreviatore" di mons. Filippo Archinto, vicario di Giulio III, poi nunzio a Venezia, indi arcidiacono di Milano. Si laureò in legge a Pavia. Fu procuratore del cardinale Cesi, legato del papa a Bologna, poi vicelegato di Bologna sotto
