Famiglia molto antica, le cui origini sono Galliche ma non ci sono prove certe se non solo qualche riferimento in scritti molto antichi come la storia dei Germani di Saxo Gramaticus scritta verso la fine del 1100, dove si legge: "...Eodem tempore Tosto quidam, obscuro Iutiae loco ortus, ferocitate clarus emersit... ...Nec Tostoni in vindictam sui animus defuit.Nam cum ob accepti vulneris magnitudinem reparandarum intra patriam virium copiam non haberet...", chiamata anche Torti fino al XVI secolo, compare in Roma nel XIV secolo, . La memoria più antica di questa famiglia ch'io sappia è del 1372 nel Catasto. Del 1379 sono nominati Conservatori il Cenci ed il Torti. Del 1452 Francesco de' Torti fu canonico di S. Pietro.
