Les armes de cette maison se voient dans le Livre-Vert de l'hôtel de Périgueux. Des auteurs disent que cette famille tire probablement son origine du fief de ce nom, situé dans la paroisse de Rouffignac, en Sarladais. Elle a donné plusieurs maires et consuls à la ville de Périgueux. En 1535, Fronton Tourtel était consul; il le fut également en 1589, époque où il signa, en cette qualité, un traité d'association pour la défense de la religion catholique, apostolique et romaine. Un Jean Tourtel, seigneur de Chastenet, était maire en 1614; un François-Bertrand Tourtel de Chastenet, l'était en 1637, et un André Tourtel de Gramont, en 1732. Un Raymond, écuyer, seigneur de la Rivière, se fit reconnaìtre, en 1682, le droit de placer des girouettes sur son habitation. Les Tourtel ont contracté, en Périgord, des alliances avec les familles de la Porte, en 1604; d'Alexandre de la Rolandie, en 1620; de Montozon, en 1624; etc..
