Dalla ricerche compiute presso l'Ufficio Araldico dell'Istituto Genealogico Italiano, risulta che la casata Traversa ha lasciato antichissime memorie in Sicilia sin dal XIV secolo. Di questa nobile famiglia notiamo Galvano che ottenne dal re Ludovico concessione del feudo di Gasba; Nicolò possedette sotto il re Federico il Semplice, le terre chiamate Finocchiara; un maestro Bartolomeo di Agrigento, che sotto lo stesso re possedette le terre chiamate Burgu, Calicabilia, Delisive, Diludeli, Gibilcari ed altre. Orlando possedette i feudi di Misilini e Tinogni. Antonio, di Messina, maestro notaro della tesoreria del regno nel 1398. Nicolò patrizio di Catania negli anni 1414-15, 1420-21; Antonio, senatore in detta città nella prima metà del XV secolo. Furono senatori anche Guglielmo, Mazziotta, Francesco e Cristoforo. Orlando ebbe il feudo di Rigilifi da lui venduto nel 1505. Un ramo risulta presente anche in Ragusa, dove nel 1453 Antonio ottenne l'investitura del feudo di Benistiti, col titolo di
