Con diploma datato da Bressanone il 31 maggio 1027, l'imperatore Corrado II concedeva al Vescovo di Trento il comitato Tridentino con tutte quelle utilità e diritti che già avevano goduto i duchi i conti e i marchesi. L'anno seguente, il 1° di giugno, si aggiungevano alla concessione già data, la contea di Bolzano e quella di Venosta. Così ebbe origine il principato ecclesiastico di Trento; il primo principe-vescovo fu Udalrico II, ma pare che già Udalrico I avesse esercitata quest'autorità sovrana e avesse avuto nell'anno 1004 una investitura relativa, di cui non si può rintracciare copia. Il potere temporale venne limitato di parecchio durante le lotte dei conti di Tirolo territorio vescovili, dati in feudo ai conti soprannominati, vennero usurpati e non più restituiti.
