Se ne à memoria fin dal 1089 nella persona di Gregorio di Pietro. Nel 1156 Ugo d'Alberto fu console della sua patria; nel 1198 un Gerardo Arciv. della stessa. Enrichetto di Simone appartenne al Consiglio degli 800. Un Francesco ebbe nel 1392 il castello di S. Martino in Sovverzano e quello di S. Prospero. Un Corradino, Domenicano, fu scritto nell'albo dei Beati. Diversi poi furono Senatori, ed altri appartennero al consiglio degli Anziani. Questa casa di così antica nobiltà, della quale fin dal 1089 si trova memoria d'un Gregorio di Pietro, già d'Ugolino, alcuni hanno voluto, che derivi dagli antichi Aristi, o Ariovisti, altri più probabilmente da una terra sul bolognese di tal nome, che dicono dominassero, ma comunque vogliasi, non facendo io conto delle Origini per esser talvolta inventati da qualche Adulatore, come pe lo più accade.
