Di fazione geremea, si diramarono a Firenze ed a Roma, e furono conti di Montechiaro. Presero parte alla Crociata del secolo XII, e nel seguente parteciparono per quarant'anni alle lotte civili e furono delle dodici famiglie che solennemente pacificaronsi per esortazione di Fr. Giovanni da Schio. Ebbero un solo senatore, e una larga serie di anziani fino al 1716. Matteo distinto giureconsulto del secolo XVII e professore nelle università di Bologna e di Torino. Giovanni Villani nella sua storia, dice che la famiglia de Griffoni è fiorentina, e che dell'anno 1270 un M. Biondo Griffone de Fighine ribelle di Fiorenza fu fatto prigioniero, non approvando il governo, e per ordine del re Carlo che attendeva occupare la repubblica fiorentina gli fu tagliata la testa. Secondo de Griffoni fu ucciso in guerra. Dal 1446 Valerio degli Griffoni del rione di Trevi fu uno delli gentiluomini romani onorato da Papa Eugenio
