Famille Messine, du XVIe siècle, établie à Messine par un Polidoro, disciple du roi Alphonse d'Aragon, lors de la conquête du royaume de Naples et père de Giorgio, célèbre capitaine des milices de Francesco Sforza. De ceux-ci sont descendus : Luigi, secrétaire et consultant du roi Jean d'Aragon ; Giuseppe, qui dans l'entreprise de l'Isola delle Gerbi, avec son propre forçat, se dressa contre les Turcs ; un autre Giuseppe fut conseiller consistorial en 1775 et juge de la Grande Cour de Palerme en 1784. Cette famille possédait les baronnies de Banderia et Villa Marchese et en 1592 portait l'habit de Malte. Matteo, le 5 octobre 1791, fut le dernier investi du titre de baron de Villa Marchese.
