Famiglia lombarda, antichissima ed assai nobile, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Tra gli innumerevoli riferimenti antichi su questa casata citiamo una vicenda avvenuta nel 1116, quando un Landolfo da Carcano ottenne dal Re Enrico IV il vescovato di Como, a danno di Guidone de Trimoldi di Cavalllasca, che era stato eletto canonicamente dal clero e dal popolo nel 1096, provocando aspre lotte tra i comaschi ed i milanesi che durarono vari anni. Il Litta nelle sua opera " Famiglie celebri italiane in foglio, e con lui gli autori concordemente, essere questa una nobile famiglia Lombarda. Nei primi decenni del 1100 in seguito ad un accordo, le quattro classi nobili e cittadine milanesi dei visconti, dei capitani, dei valvassori (subfeudatari) e dei militi del popolo, costituirono, retto da consoli, il Comune Signorile di Milano che sottraendosi poco a poco alla giurisdizione del vescovo separò nettamente i due
