Famille ancienne et illustre, originaire de Lombardie, diverses branches de cette famille se sont répandues dans différentes régions d'Italie, principalement sur le territoire de Gênes et de Sicile. Litta dans son ouvrage "Famous Italian Families in Sheet", et avec lui les auteurs sont d'accord, il s'agit d'une famille lombarde.
