Notizie di questa famiglia risalgono ad un Leone, che intervenne ad una donazione fatta dalla città di Ravello al monastero di S. Trifone nel 1096. Godette nobiltà nella città di Scala, da dove un ramo si stabilì verso la fine del sec. XIV in Bisceglie, con un Fiorillo, protonotario di Barletta e Bisceglie, qualificato in un documento "milite e nobile di Scala". Il ramo di Scala si estinse. Quello di Bisceglie, ricevuto nell'Ordine di Malta nel 1704, diede origine nel sec. XVII al ramo di Terra di Otranto, decorato nel 1725 del titolo di duca di Scorrano con un Francesco Paolo, e nel 1755 del titolo di conte di S. Cassiano, cultore di studi storici, che fondò nel 1785 in Scorrano l'Accademia detta degli "Intrepidi". Luigi, generale dei Teatini, poi vescovo di Lecce nel 1805, ed altri.
