Es catalán y algunos cronistas suponen que procede de los condes de Urgel, y más concretamente de Gisberto de Urgel, que tuvo el señorío o baronía de la Geltrú en aquel condado, y de quien fue descendiente Gualberto de T., llamado así por un instrumento bélico que utilizó en la reconquista de Cataluña y que al ser dispara do imitaba el ruido de un trueno. Así refiere la tradición el lejano origen y formación de este apellido. Añade que Mirón de T., hijo y sucesor de dicho Gualberto, floreció en el siglo XII, siendo conde soberano de Barcelona Ramón Berenguer II, con el cual asistió a la toma de los castillos de Orduna, Ciurana y otros del Panadés. En la conquista del reino de Valencia también intervinieron caballeros de este linaje. Y Jacinto de T. sirvió a los Reyes Católicos en la de Granada.
