Ancienne et illustre famille de Campanie, qui s'est répandue au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. L'origine de ce patronyme, selon d'illustres généalogistes, doit être recherchée dans le nom germanique altéré "Druht", ou "Trutten", qui appartenait probablement à un géniteur aujourd'hui inconnu. Les premiers vestiges laissés par la famille se trouvent dès 1100, à Salerne, où vécut une Mme Trotta, qui semble avoir été la première femme médecin de l'histoire. Dans la bibliographie "Journal arcadien des sciences, des lettres et des arts" imprimée à Rome en 1826, dans le volume 32 se trouvent divers actes rédigés à Lucques en 1104 dans lesquels une "Rainerius brand cum uxore sua Trotta" est mentionnée. Una Trotta était donc médecin à Salerne au XVIe siècle, il écrivit divers ouvrages médicaux parmi lesquels on cite "De muliebrium passionibus ante, in, et post partum".
