Pur mancando indizi precisi è presumibile che i T. di Sale traggano origine dal ceppo di Pavia donde diramarono nel Vogherese, nel Tortonese e nel capoluogo lombardo ove s'imparentarono con i Visconti (una zia di Bianca era moglie di un T.). Il Cavagna Sangiuliani nel suo "Agro Vogherese" annovera i T. tra le famiglie più antiche di Vogheraviventi nei sec. XII- XIV; proprietà di Pietro in Carlasco sul Po (Garlassolo) confinano con beni venduti tra terzi il 5 novembre 1161; altri terreni dei T. nel Vogherese confinano con proprietà che il 23 agosto 1173 alcuni testi confermano appartenere al monastero di S.Maria delSenatore di pavia; durante la tregua concordata cogli Alessandrini il 17 aprile 1175 per stipulare la pace tra Federico I e la Lega Lombarda, Carbone T. è uno dei tre consoli delegati dal comune di Pavia. Alla istituzione del XII sec. delle magistrature consolari seguì quella dei podestà
