Es una de las familias más distinguidas y antiguas de las Baleares. Ya existía en Mallorca en la época de la conquista. No se la menciona en el libro del repartimiento, pero en auténticos documentos consta que en el año 1242 era persona de mucho arraigo en aquella isla Berengario T. Andando los tiempos obtuvieron sus descendientes privilegio perpetuo de ciudadores militares y de caballeros. Prestaron importantes servicios de la Corona, ingresaron en las Ordenes de Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara y San Juan de Jerusalén y en la Maestranza de Granada, y fueron jurados de la ciudad y reino de Mallorca. Por real cédula de 12 de marzo de 1728, concedió Felipe V a don Nicolás T. y Donato el título de Castilla con la denominación de marqués de la Torre y sobre la hacienda "Torre del Fangar", que venía poseyendo desde el año 1323.
