La famiglia originaria da Sesto, paese sito alle falde di Monte Elmo donde ebbe origine il predicato di Helmeheim, ridotto ora nella forma italiana di Monte Elmo e conferito assieme alla nobiltà del S.R.I. dall'imper. Ferdinando II a Cristoforo con diploma del 3 aprile 1625. L'albero genealogico di questa famiglia risale documentato fino a Nicolò, i cui genitori sembra siano stati Ulrico il Tritatore e Gertrude, e l'avo Osvaldo, marito di una Borgonda avrebbe vissuto verso il 1350. Da quest'epoca sembra datare il più antico stemma della famiglia. Nella battaglia di Mohàcs in Ungheria, combattuta nel 1526 contro i Turchi, caddero valorosamente tre membri di questa famiglia, cui sembra che a quest'epoca sia stato conferito a ricordo di questo fatto di armi un nuovo stemma, che venne poi confermato col citato diploma del 1625 e riconosciuto assieme al titolo di nobile del S.R.I. (mf.) con D.M. del 17 nov. 1927.
