Nobile famiglia lucchese, proveniente dai Tieri di Feucecchio, e che assunse il cognome nel sec. XV da certo Tuala, di Piero. Fu ammessa alla cittadinanza nel 1447 con Angelo, che fece parte del Consiglio della Repubblica, al cui governo dette dal 1486 al 1762 numerosi anziani, gonfalonieri e ambasciatori. Fra i più cospicui personaggi della famiglia sono ricordati degli ecclesiastici: Domenico, rettore della chiesa di S.Jacopo alla Tomba, letterato a filantropo, morto nel 1575; Nicolao, protonotario apostolico, che sostenne varie ambascerie per la Repubblica alla quale lasciò, con suo testamento del 2 nov. 1607, la "cronica di Lucca" da lui compiuta nel 1597. Domenico fu uomo di grande santità e fu il quarto generale della Congrega-Dio, morì a Roma l'11 nov. 1651.
