Famiglia originaria dalla Lombardia, che passata in Napoli si trasferì poi in Andria e quindi in Bisceglie; decorata del titolo di marchese sin dall'anno 1579, concesso da re Filippo II a D. Tommaso, riconosciuta in tale titolo dalla Real Camera di S. Chiara nel 1785, e con R. Rescritto 11 aprile 1840. Illustrò particolarmente questa famiglia il generale di cavalleria marchese Ottavio Tappati, n. il 18 sett. 1798, dec, 7 gennaio 1865. Combatté alla battaglia di Jena ed in quelle che terminarono con la pace di Tilsitt. Fece le campagne di Spagna e di Russia. In quest'ultima, mandato in esplorazione, ritrovò un reggimento tedesco ritenuto disperso, ne prese il comando, e lo ricondusse, respingendo il nemico sulla linea del fuoco. Compì nelle sue campagne, innumerevoli atti di valore: fu particolarmente elogiato al re Murat da Napoleone; riportò otto ferite. A Vilna meritò la croce della Legione d'Onore.
