Le prime notizie sulla casata, di cui mancano indizi per attribuire loro una qualche affinità con la stessa di Asti risalgono al 1165 anno del loro rientro a Tortona abbandonata in seguito alle distruzioni del 1155 e 1163; nel 1185 un membro dell famiglia, Lanfranco, è eletto al seggio consolare, e coi colleghi il 14 luglio promette ai milanesi di salvaguardare le strade del territorio tortonese; i signori di Grondona, tra cui detto Lanfranco che il 29 gennaio 1191 delibera alla Credenza, di cui era membro, su di un mutuo che il Comune contrae con Guarniero Beccaria; rieletto console nel 1197 giura con il figlio Guglielmo l'osservanza del trattato di pace ed alleanza della durata di 29 anni stipulato il 3 giugno tra genovesi e tortonesi; il 3 luglio 1197 i marchesi Malaspina ed i signori di Mongiardino cedono al vescovo ed ai consoli di Tortona, presente Lanfranco, ogni diritto
