Antigua e ilustre familia del Reino de Nápoles, que se extendió a lo largo de los siglos por diversas regiones de Italia y Europa. El origen de este apellido hay que buscarlo en el personal "Turdus", muy en uso en el período latino tardío. Según nos ha llegado, esta familia estaba agregada al patriciado de Salerno. El primer personaje del que tenemos noticias es un Lapo Turdo, barón de Orsogna y Tutoli, verdugo en Terra del Lavoro y el condado de Molise, hombre de confianza del duque de Calabria, floreciente en 1301. Originario de Pistoia, de familia española descendencia, fue el primero en asentarse en el Sur y continuar allí su descendencia. Por otra parte, la familia, en el devenir de las décadas, siempre ha sabido destacarse por las altas personalidades que engendró, claras en las profesiones liberales, en las carreras militar y eclesiástica.
