Antica e nobile famiglia, originaria della città di Lettere. Tale cognominizzazione, anteriore al XIV secolo, dovrebbe derivare o da soprannomi originati dal mestiere di mastro ferriere, ma anche in alcuni casi legati al termine medioevale accia (scure, lama), italianizzazione del termine germanico hacke con il medesimo significato, che ha originato il termine italiano moderno accetta. Giuseppe è il personaggio più rappresentativo della famiglia, avendola portata al consiglio dei nobili della città di Napoli. Venne dichiarata, infatti, ammissibile nelle Regie Reali Guardie del Corpo, con deliberazione della Commissione dei titoli di nobile, il 2 agosto 1853, avendo il detto Giuseppe, con il grado di alfiere (sottotenente) del 2° Reggimento Lancieri Reali, partecipato alla campagna del 1860/61, per la difesa del Regno delle Due Sicilie dall'invasione piemontese.
