Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni di Spagna e del Sud America. L'origine di questo cognome va ricercata in area basca; esso deriva infatti dall'unione tra la parola basca "ugarte/uharte" (= isola) e il sostantivo "etxe" (=casa), con il significato finale di "casa della isola". La chiara nobiltà della famiglia Ugarteche viene confermata anche dalla sua presenza in alcune delle più pregevoli opere di araldica, tra cui il fondamentale "Repertorio de blasones de la comunidad hispánica - letras S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z" di Vicente de Cadenas y Vicent (29 Aprile 1915 – 21 Dicembre 2005), "cronista rey de Armas" del Regno di Spagna.
