E' questa annoverata fra le nobili e antiche casate genovesi. L'istorico Ganduccio nelle sue Origini delle nobili casate antiche di Genova ne attribuisce la provenienza dalla Grecia, dondo l'origine del cognome Ultra-Mare, ed inoltre una tradizione la vuole originaria da un certo Licaonio di Arcadia, all'epoca delle lotte fra la Repubblica di Venezia e di Genova per la supremazia in Arcadia, lotte che culminarono con la conquista veneziana. Un Guglielmo, nel 1165, cercò rifugio nella repubblica di Genova ed andò a stabilirsi in Paregio presso Rapallo. Il Federico Federici, poi, nel suo Scrutinio della Nobiltà Luguristica (1630), asserisce che l'origine di questa famiglia dall'Arcadia è confermata dal leone armati di bastone d'oro, in campo azzurro, e che, in verità, era l'arma antica usata da questa casata.
