Antiguo linaje vizcaíno, con casas en la anteiglesia de Berango y en la villa de Orozco, ambas del partido de Bilbao; en las anteiglesias de Ceánuri e Ibárruri, del partido de Durango, y en esta villa. Otra casa hubo en Santa María de Guerricáiz, del mismo partido. De la casa de Santa María de Guerricáiz procedió Juan de U. Aurtenechea, esposo de doña María de Garaita, y ambos, padres de Domingo de Unda Aurtenechea y Garaita, bautizado en Santa María de Guerricáiz, el 6 de Enero de 1713, que contrajo matrimonio con doña María de Labayen, bautizado en la anteiglesia de Mújica el 13 de Diciembre de 1750, que fué Adiministrador de Alcabalas y Rentas Reales de la villa de San Juan Bautista de llerena y minas de Sombrerete, en Nueva España, y el 1º Noviembre de 1794, ganó Real provisión de vizcanía en la Chancillería de Valladolid. Una rama vizcaína de este apellido pasó a Navarra, quedando establecida en la ciudad de Viana. Estos U. fueron confirmados en su nobleza por los Tribunales Reales de Corte y Consejo de Navarra en los años 1562 y 1688, obteniendo ejecutorias y la gracia de llamamiento a Cortes.
