Nobile e antica famiglia basca che ebbe il suo primitivo primato nell'Ispáster anteiglesia, dal partito di Marquina a Vizcaya. La nobiltà Uriarte fu riconosciuta fin dai tempi antichi. Sei dei suoi cavalieri appartenevano all'Ordine di Santiago. Altre famiglie di Uriarte, forse dello stesso tronco, risiedevano nelle ante-chiese di Larrabezúa, del partito di Bilbao; San Salvador de Frúniz, Arrieta, Mendaca, Morga, Munguía e la città di Bermeo, tutti del partito Guernica e anche a Vizcaya. Questa famiglia ebbe molto anche ad Álava, Guipúzcoa e nelle città di Larrabezúa, Zumaya, Araya e Zurbano; quest'ultimo proveniente dalla vecchia casa di Ispáter. Gli Uriarte raggiunsero i titoli di Marchesi di Vaciaquito, Conde de Acebuche, Valdediós e Vizconde de Torrepicos. Don Miguel de U. y Herrera, un professo cavaliere dell'abitudine di Santiago, sposò Doña María de Borja y Lasteros, che ebbe otto figli.
