Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di probabile origine siciliana propagata, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, ascritta alla nobiltà nel territorio laziale. L'origine di questo cognome, antichissimo, dovrebbe derivare da forme ipocoristiche del cognomen latino Ursus, l'uso di questi nomi è riscontrabile nel 1063, ad esempio, all'epoca della conquista della Sicilia da parte di Roberto il Guiscardo contro i saraceni, che allora la possedevano: "...Comes ergo et Ursellus de Ballione, suos solito formidolosiores prae nimia multitudine hostium, quam exhorrebant, videntes, talibus exhortationibus timorem ex ipsis excutere nitebantur: "Arrigite animos vestros, o fortissimi christianae militiae tyrones. Omnes Christi titulo insigniti sumus: qui non deseret signaculum suum, nisi offensus?"...", in alcuni casi può anche provenire dal nome femminile medioevale germanico Ursel di cui abbiamo un esempio nella Storia austriaca in un editto del 21 aprile 1361: "...Wir vergeben auch, daz unser vorgenanten Swester Ursel vertzeichbrief geben sol alz
