La familia muy antigua y noble originaria de Sicilia, propagada en diferentes regiones de Italia, donde se leen las variaciones cognominales. Los primeros vestigios documentales son del siglo IV, donde Flavio Urso fue general y político en Roma, en el siglo IX en el Historia veneticorum escrito por el Campaniano Giovanni Diacono se puede leer: "... Stephani Candiani filius y Stephanus de Sabulo, Dominicus Faletri filius, Ursus Grugnarius, dúo fratres Salbiani filii et multi alii, nomina corum ignoramus ... ". Numerosos autores de la familia describieron eventos y personajes, atribuyéndole diversos orígenes sin ningún certificado válido. Sobre la base de documentos seguros, la crítica histórica moderna ha explicado las reconstrucciones genealógicas artificiales de aquellos escritores que, por complaciente espíritu de adulación, exigieron que esta familia descendiera de prosapias nobles y antiguas como la de otras familias.
