Antica famiglia monferrina che ebbe parte di giurisdizione anche su Rocchetta Palafea e su Terruggia, con beni feudali in molti luoghi. Diramò largamente e forse prese il primo nome dal luogo di Sala. Le prime memorie sono del secolo XIV e pare che capostipite della schiatta fosse un Raimondetto Dava della Scala, investito di beni feudali a Quazzolo il 10 gennaio 1353. Fu parte di Guglielmo, detto Bogero, cancelliere del marchese di Monferrato, acquisitore, da Bonifacio di Rinco, di punti di Castelletto Merli, dei quali fu investito il 16 luglio 1367. Due anni dopo, il 20 maggio 1369, egli veniva pure investito di punti di Usala; e così i due feudi possono dirsi in famiglia da circa sei secoli. Nacquero da lui: Giovanni, autore di un ramo finito sul principio del sec. XVII, illustrato particolarmente dai fratelli Pietro-Giorgio e Bonifacio, che l'imperatore Carlo V creò conti palatini il 10 dicembre
