L'antica casa Usimbardi di Firenze, già consolare, mancò nel tumulto delle guerre civili durante il XIII secolo; ma un ramo di essa erasi già trapiantato in Colle, e nel 1588 fu con decreto del magistrato supremo riconosciuto da essa discendente. Appartennero a questo ramo Usimbardo Vescovo di Colle, Pietro Vescovo di Arezzo e Lorenzo segretario di Ferdinando I e poi senatore, tutti fratelli e figli di Messer Francesco. Fulvio, altro fratello, fondò il priorato di Colle nell'Ordine di S. Stefano, ed ebbe un figlio col quale si spense la famiglia verso la metà del secolo XVII. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de' maggiori.
