Famiglia francese assai antica e nobile, propagatasi in Italia nel XVI secolo. Appartenne all'alta borghesia di Puy Un Jean, figlio di Pierre, tutore di Guillome du Monastier, figlio di Reymond, il quale gli concesse vari feudi in Puy tra il 1362 ed il 1389. La famiglia risulta divisa in vari rami, uno dei quali giunto in Italia, nel XVI secolo. Uno, ormai estinto, restò in Velay con François, servitore di Jean II de Polignac, signore d'Adiac (1511); un altro si stabilì in Carpentras nel 1509 con Jean, notaro e capo cancelliere della corte suprema della Rectorerie. Uno dei suoi fratelli passò in Nimes, formando un ramo che diede consiglieri e uomini illustri alla città; un altro fratello, Nicolas, passò nel regno delle Due Sicilie con le truppe di Louis XII.
