La famiglia, originaria di Barbania, con diramazioni nel vicino Comune di Oglianico, in provincia di Torino, ha tradizioni remote di lustro e di nobiltà. Già alla metà del secolo XVII e più precisamente il 22 ott. 1650, Michele otteneva Patenti di infeudazione di beni in Barbania; infeudazione che veniva rinnovata il 2 ott. 1678, a favore di due dei suoi figli, l'avv. Pietro Lodovico e il notaio Carlo Francesco, il primo dei quali fu capostipite della linea dei conti di Piedicavallo, mentre un altro fratello minore, Giovanni, dava luogo ad altra linea agnatizia che fu illustre per cariche civili e militari non meno della linea primogenita. Michele predetto ricorre citato in tutti i documenti dell'epoca con la qualifica di "nobile".
