Vieille noblesse. On trouve son nom diversement écrit Vacheroles ou Vacheyrolles. Artaud, chevalier, époux de Philippa du Fieu, figure en 1266 parmi les témoins du testament de Bertrand du Fieu son beau-père, testament qu'il scelle de son sceau. Armand, chevalier, seigneur dudit lieu, est compris dans l'hommage que Bertrand de Chalencon, son suzerain, rend au comte de Forez, de ses alleuz et arrières fiefs, le 30 mai 1293. Artaud II est dit coseigneur de Veyrines paroisse de St-André en 1334 et 1337. Guillaume, dit de la Coste, épousa en 1355 Marguerite de Marminhac et vivait encore en 1389. A ce nom, on attribue un signe distinctif de noblesse représenté par le blason que l'on reproduit ci-dessous et qui confirme aussi à travers ses emblêmes, au point de vue historique et héraldique, l'assurance d'une valeur remarquable. Il est fort difficile, pour ne pas dire impossible, de réunir en faisceau toutes les tiges éparses de cette maison.
