Questa famiglia, da non confondersi con altra omonima ferrarese ora estinta, fu portata a Ferrara in tempi piuttosto recenti da Urbino, ove essa godeva del patriziato; pare però che tragga le sue origini da Mantova, nonostante la scarsezza delle notizie. Francesco Agnelli era un gentiluomo del Cardinal d'Urbino nel 1562 e del governatore di Cingolim nel 1751. Antonio Vagnelli, dottore, dal 1774 in poi ricoprì per lunghi anni importanti uffici giudiziari in patria, ad Ancona, a Bologna, e fu anche dal 1784 al `98 pubblico lettore di legge nell'Università di Urbino. Il giureconsulto Giuseppe, nato nel 1792, morto nel 1856, compiuti gli studi legali a Ferrara e quelli militari a Pavia, servì come sottotenente, indi come tenente, nelle armate napoleoniche dal 1812 al `14, e meritò sul campo di battaglia la croce della Corona di ferro. Dopo la caduta del regno d'Italia ritornò a Ferrara, dedicandosi con successo all'esercizio dell'avvocatura,
