Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato essa è un ramo della nobilissima omonima casata parmigiana Barbieri da Vairo, a sua volta uno dei due rami in cui si divisero i Vallisneri nel XIII secolo, passato a risiedere in Napoli nel corso del XV secolo. Per tal motivo i due casati condividono l'arma. Da Napoli diramarono in tutto il Regno, con insediamenti più cospicui nel territorio di Salerno. Nobili nel sangue ma anche per capacità e moralità, i Vairo furono uomini di legge, medici, ecclesiastici, letterati e militari. Tra i primi personaggi di cui abbiamo novella fioriti nel salernitano vi è certamente il benedettino Leonardo Vairo (Magliano Vetere, 1543 circa - Pozzuoli, 1603), prima canonico di S.
