Famiglia originaria di Alcantara, del regio sangue dei re di Leon, nel decimo secolo. Fu detta pure A. Maldonato, perchè si vuole che D. Mugno Perez de A. nel 920, vinto in duello il Duca Guglielmo di Normandia, chiese a Carlo III il semplice, cinque gigli per arme, ed il re concedendoglieli, gli disse ve li ho Maldonati, cioè per cosa che al re non piaceva. Ha goduto nobiltà, in varie città di Spagna, in Pisa, Firenze e Lucera. Il ramo di Lucera si estinse in Caterina maritata nella famiglia Candida nel 1559. Un ramo passò in Firenze nel 1540. Ha goduto l'ordine del Toson d'oro. Fu ricevuta nell'ordine di Malta nel 1554. Edificò in Alcantara il nobile convento di Santo Spirito. Si veggono Monumenti di questa famiglia in Napoli nelle Chiese di S. Anna di palazzo, S. Giovanni e Vittoria, in Firenze nel castello S. Miniano, ed in Lucera.
