Família de origem espanhola cujo solar é em Valdés. Em 1253 vivia Pedro Melendez de Valés, herdado em Sevilha. O apelido passou a Portugal na pessoa de Gonçalo Mendres de Valdés, filho segundo dos senhores de Valdés, com geração. Também veio para Portugal em1592, Jerónimo Garcia Valdés, filho de Francisco Garcia Valdés, naturais de Infiesto, nas Astúrias, e de sua mulher D. Mencia Gonzalez de Gove. Jerónimo Garcia veio como soldado de cavalaria e pertenceu à guarnição castelhana do castelo de Lisboa. Casou-se com D. Maria Ferreira, viveram na freguesia dos Mártires e deixaram geração, que seguiu o apelido Valdez. Com outras pessoa passou o apelido ao Reino.
