Família antiga e muito nobre, cujo progenitor era Bartolomeu, chamado de 'Lavelli, filho de Antonio, Magnan, natural de Pagnone em Valvassina, no Estado de Milão, que se estabeleceu em Castelnuovo di Garfagnana no início do século XV. Valdringo Cozza nasceu de seu filho Jacopo Cozza e, destes, o capitão Bernardino, mencionado em um ato do ano de 1537.
