Ancienne famille du Trentin, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. L'origine de ce patronyme, antérieure à 1350, selon des généalogistes faisant autorité, doit être recherchée dans le hameau homonyme de Terragnolo. Selon Schneller, « duga » signifierait « fosse pour la conduite d'eau ; canal ; aqueduc ». Par conséquent, Valduga signifierait "Vallée de l'Aqueduc". Lorenzi précise cependant qu'il n'y a pas de canaux dans la localité et préfère considérer « duga » comme le féminin (en accord avec « vallée ») du terme trentin dugo « chouette » : Valduga signifierait donc « vallée de la chouette ». ". En tout cas, selon le moment où elle nous est transmise, la famille a été décorée de la chevalerie héréditaire, suite aux services fidèles rendus par un Alberto, porte-étendard de la Sainte Église Romaine, au général Jacopo Boncompagni (Bologne, 8 mai 1548
