Nobile, antichissima famiglia, che si crede originaria da Aquileia, emigrata in Udine nel secolo XIII, dove esercitava la mercatura in società la mercatura in società con i Gubertini da Novate, con i quali aveva stretto vincoli di sangue. Ricchissimi, sino dai primi tempi occuparono le più alte cariche della città e si imparentarono con le maggiori famiglie dell'artistocrazia friulana. Erano ascritti anche alla nobiltà di Monfalcone, dove Enrico e Nicolò nel 1355 fungevano da capitani della città. Nel 1656 ereditarono i beni dei Gubertini. Nel 1647 Coriolano di Nicolò fu investito della contea di Tricesimo ed in varie epoche la famiglia godette le giurisdizioni feudali di Nimis, Billerio e Villafredda. Nel 1740 Francesco e Carlo furono creati conti palatini ereditari dal pontefice Benedetto XIV. La famiglia dette alla chiesa la beata Elena (1395-1458), il cui corpo è venerato nel duomo di Udine e generò parecchi personaggi, che si distinsero
