Adagiato su un lieve pendio della dorsale che fa da spartiacque tra il Grue e l'Ossona, l'abitato di Palenzona, ora frazione di Avolasca, era anticamente popolato da collettività romane delle quali si rinvennero in questi ultimi tempi tombe e suppellettili; in epoche posteriori nativi del luogo, che assunsero il nome della loro terra per una più precisa identità rimasero poi come cognome, si trasferirono in Tortona ove non tardarono a distinguersi ed assumere cariche preminenti nel governo della città: difatti il 3 giugno 1197 consoli e credendari del comune di Tortona, tra cui Ugo de P., stipulano un trattato di pace ed alleanza della durata di 29 anni col comune di Genova; molti tortonesi tra cui Bernardo de P. il 26 agosto 1198 giurano l'osservanza dei capitoli di pace proposti dai consoli di Pavia per dirimere le vertenze insorte tra Genova e Tortona; nel 1202 Marco P. è canonico della
