La famiglia era nota in Reggio fino del secolo XIII, e probabilmente trae il suo nome dalla villa e monte di Valestra. Un Francesco, vivente nel 1266, fu compilatore degli Statuti di Reggio, come ricorda il Tacoli, che nomina moltissimi di questa famiglia, come Valestra Alessandro nel 1337; e nel 1315 Francesco e Pietro, e nel 1323 Gherardo, di Nicolò coi figli Michele, Matteo e Prospero, ed altri nel secolo XIV e XV. Altro Gherardo, vivente nel 1497, fu giureconsulto ed è ricordato nel "Syntagmata Statutorum" Il Padre Abate don Pietro, vivente nel 1631, fu poeta e scrisse in un canzoniere. Teobaldo, di Alessandro, giureconsulto vivente nel 1624, è pure nominato nel "Syntagmata Statutorum" si addottorò nel collegio legale di Reggio. Pare che un ramo di questa famiglia si sia trasferito in territorio di Mantova dopo la peste del 1630, che aveva spopolato
