Antica famiglia di Vallo della Lucania, feudataria della terra di S. Basile. Prese stabile dimora in Napoli con Tommaso, n. Vallo 29 gennaio 1765, dec. a Napoli 12 aprile 1827. Questi fu ammesso ai Reali Bacimano con biglietto della Regia Maggiordomia Maggiore di Sua Maestà il 4 maggio 1819. Con Regie Lettere Patenti 23 settembre 1920, questa famiglia è stata riconosciuta per legittima successione della famiglia Avena nei titoli di duca (mpr.) e di marchese (mpr.) e di nobile col predicato di Avena, titoli già riconosciuti con Decreto Ministeriale 13 aprile 1879 ad Ippolita d'Avena, n. 18 settembre 1828, vedova di Michele, come succeduta alla sua maggior sorella, Mariantonia, alla quale per refuta di suo zio Domenico d'Avena (deced. 17 gennaio 1858) erasi con precedente decreto 24 ottobre 1846 permesso di assumere il titolo di marchese.
