Antica famiglia, la quale riconosce come capostipite un Manfredo, ai servigi della regina Eleonora, moglie di re Federico III, il quale portò questa famiglia in Sicilia ove, divisasi in tre rami, si sparse in Messina, in Siracusa ed in Catania. Antonio fu vescovo di Siracusa; Lodovico capitano di galera; Girolamo castellano di detta città sotto re Alfonso. Un Gutterra fu barone della Crucifia e del Cugno; un Vincenzo, da Catania, barone di Fiumefreddo e Crucifia, con privilegio dato a 20 aprile 1559, ottenne concessione del titolo di regio cavaliere; un Francesco, con privilegio dato a 5 luglio 1563, ottenne concessione del titolo di regio cavaliere, e, con privilegio dato a 13 dicembre 1563 esecutoriato a 28 maggio 1566, ottenne il titolo di nobile col Don, fu capitano di giustizia in Catania negli anni 1568-69 e 1569-70; un Francesco, barone della Miraglia, fu senatore in detta città negli anni 1612-13 e
