Da Vallemala (oggi Vallemara, frazione di Crocefieschi) attinse il nome una famiglia originaria del luogo la quale acquisì notorietà partecipando alla rivolta promossa da Leonetto Calcinara che nel 1090 estromise da Tortona i messi regi e la città svincolandosi dalla sovranità d'Oltralpe, si eresse a Comune indipendente riaffermatosi nel 1122 colla costituzione del comune Signorile. Da un'antica pergamena di cui dà notizie il Montemerlo ed il Bottazzi si rileva che i V.erano annoverati tra le famiglie nobili ivi viventi nell'anno 1140. Vuolsi che Vocemola, allora villa o cella, nella seconda metà del XII sec. fosse infeudata dagli abati di Precipaino ad Alberto V.; in Genova Giovanni de V. di Tortona il 3 dicembre 1191 promette di pagare alla fiera di Lagny (Parigi) una somma di denaro in provini ad Enrico Alfieri; Ammonio è nel 1200 canonico della cattedrale di Tortona; Martino è teste in istrumento del 24 novembre 1204 con
