The family originated from the mountain of Reggio Emilia, and probably from Vallisnera, from which the town probably took its name. The earliest memoirs date back to 1107, the year in which the brothers Rodolfo and Guglielmo, Rainiero's sons, granted freedom to a servant. Buonaccorso, ambassador of the municipality of Reggio in 1237 received a promise of obedience from many inhabitants of Vallisniera for Manfredo di Cornazzano podestà of Reggio. On February 1, 1469, Emperor Frederick III created Count and Knight a Giannantonio da Vallisniera, Camerlengo Ducale estense, nicknamed Mazzone.
