A família se originou da montanha de Reggio Emilia e provavelmente de Vallisnera, da qual a cidade provavelmente recebeu seu nome. As primeiras memórias datam de 1107, ano em que os irmãos Rodolfo e Guglielmo, filhos de Rainiero, concederam liberdade a um servo. Buonaccorso, embaixador do município de Reggio em 1237, recebeu uma promessa de obediência de muitos habitantes de Vallisniera por Manfredo di Cornazzano podestà de Reggio. Em 1º de fevereiro de 1469, o imperador Frederico III criou Conde e Cavaleiro, um Giannantonio da Vallisniera, Camerlengo Ducale estense, apelidado de Mazzone. Além do feudo de Vallisniera acima mencionado, essa família possuía os de Nigone, Ramaceto e Monte Mischioso, dos quais o mencionado Giannantonio em 1472 recebeu a renovação da investidura do duque Ercole d'Este.
