Gli Storici e le Cronache danno a quest'illustre prosapia, diffusa in Francia, in Italia, in Germania, nei Paesi-bassi e nel Tirolo un'origine assai antica. Dopochè nei Secoli XII, XIII e XIV alcuni Individui della medesima pervennero al Governo e Principato di Milano e di altre cospicue città, che dovettero cedere alla sorte delle Armi, si stabilirono nel Friuli di cui ebbero parimente il dominio nelle persone di quattro Patriarchi di Aquileja del suo ceppo, che governarono quella Provincia come Principi, Sovrani, e Vicarj degl'Imperatori. Da tempo remoto questa celebre Famiglia è in possesso del titolo di Conte di Vasassina (Valle Sassena) del fu Sacro Romano Impero che le fu confermato in tutta l'estensione dall'Imperatore Carlo V con Diploma 26 maggio 1533 da Massimiliano II con Diploma 13 giugno 1572, e da Leopoldo I con Diploma 16 giugno 1664.
