Illustre ed antica famiglia del Friuli. Capostipite fu un Odorico, venuto dalla Carintia in Italia nel 1005 con Popone, Patriarca di Aquileja, eresse il castello di Cucagna, dal quale i suoi discendenti, divisi in quattro rami, trassero il cognome. Furono aggregati al Parlamento del Friuli quali feudatari castellani e conservarono l'alta e bassa giurisdizione sul castello e terre annesse sino al 1797. Con dipl. 15 gennaio 1362 l'imper. carlo IV creò conti del S.R.I. i fratelli Vulvino, Enrico e Giovanni, titolo confermato il 5 gennaio dall'imper. Federico III e a Paolo il 29 ottobre 1562 da carlo V. Fu investita delle signorie di Cucagna, Valvasone, Partistagno e ville annesse il 2 marzo 1705 e 2 ottobre 1780. Questa famiglia vestì l'abito di Malta e dell'Ordine Teutonico. Fu confermata nella nobiltà con S.R.A. 2 giugno 1821. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano coi titoli di nobile del Friuli e
