Ancient Germanic family, originally from the city of Stuttgart, spread over the centuries in various European regions. According to what is handed down to us, this family belonged to the ancient nobility of the "Uradel", a term coined only in modern times, referring to noble families whose ancestral lineage can be traced back to times prior to the Late Middle Ages. Contrasts with "Briefadel" (lit. "letter of nobility"), or titles created by the monarch with patent letters, a fashion which, influenced by French practice, was introduced in Germany under the Emperor Charles IV (r. 1346–1378 ). A branch of the family also flourished in Austrian territory, finding a Nikolaus as a court clerk with the Habsburgs in Vienna in 1270 and another Nikolaus as a customs officer in 1354, again with the Dukes of Habsburg.
