E' questa una delle più celebri principesche d'Italia, avendo regnato dal XIII al XVI secolo in Camerino, prima col titolo di Vicari della Santa Sede e quindi con quello di Duchi coaferitole dal Pontefice Leone X. Ultimo Duca fu Giovanni Maria Varano morto nel 1517 lasciando un'unica figlia che avea destinato in sposa ad Ercole suo consanguineo perchè non si spegnesse la dinastia e fosse a questa conservato il ducato. Ma le mene della vedova del defunto Duca e quelle della S. Sede su Camerino mandarono a vuoto il progetto di Giovanni Maria, la cui figlia fu sposata al Duca d'Urbino. Ercole allora rifugiossi in Ferrara sotto la protezione della casa Estense, e quivi stabilì nel 1542 la propria famiglia, la quale si spense de'nostri giorni nella persona del march. Rodolfo senatore del regno. In Ferrara i Varano furono sempre tenuti nella più alta considerazione ed occuparono le prime cariche
